Therapy Dogs for Law Enforcement Agencies

What a first responder sees on the job can create an impact that lasts for many years. While the need for assistance for victims is readily apparent, society has traditionally considered it part of the responder's job. In many places, that attitude is changing.
Public safety agencies across the country are increasingly turning to therapy dogs to help improve the psychological well-being of their employees. A well-trained therapy dog and its handler can tremendously positively affect an individual's wellness following a traumatic event.
Studies have shown that therapy dogs:
Significantly reduce heightened short-term anxiety following a critical incident.
Assist officers who face growing tension on the streets or quietly suffer from work or personal issues. Dogs tend to disarm officers who could benefit from help but might not otherwise feel comfortable talking freely with a colleague.
Support staff by providing comfort to a witness or a victim of a crime so that investigators can efficiently—and less stressfully—gather information about the offense and the offender.
Therapy dogs can make a difference in your community, making appearances at schools, parades, and other community events. The dog and the handler become magnets for kids as well as kids-at-heart.
A therapy dog is not an everyday house pet. These dogs are health tested and selected for specific personality characteristics such as calmness and empathy, and then meticulously trained to help ease heightened emotions and relieve stressful situations.
Domesti-PUPS can furnish the right canine candidate for your needs. We offer puppies explicitly raised for their health and temperament or can provide trained adults, complete with the American Kennel Club’s Community Canine designation.
